Dr. Javier Albares: La ciencia del buen dormir (Paperback, Ediciones Península) 2 estrellas

Review of 'La ciencia del buen dormir' on 'Goodreads'

2 estrellas

Great insights. At the same time, most of its content is nothing "totally new", but the reminders are always worthy as well as a few wisdom pearls.

Too short for the price, I would say, but I decided to approach it as a collaboration for all the amazing content shared by Kent Beck during the last years for free. I think it's totally worthy.

Only a little bit surprised by not reading a more elaborated description of the "connascence" concept, I think it brings a lot of clarity to the traditional "coupling" term.

Ha superado mis expectativas. Escalofriantemente premonitorio en algunas partes. El dominio de la escritura que tiene Ray Bradbury es maravilloso.

It's quite unusual for me to read a book about management coming from the US culture and feel it so highly valuable.
Sarah Drasner looks like the kind of person I would definitely like to know and work with, and that's a lot to say XD

Parts 1, 2, and 4 are pure GOLD. You need to carefully read it. Take notes. Reflect on it. Absolutely amazing. Lots of wisdom, lots of humanity, and lots of practical experience.
I confess that some advices in part 3 (the one more into "engineering") sound horrible to me, quite misaligned with the way I understand product development based on software. But still, that doesn't eclipse the rest of the book (which is most of the content).

I would definitely recommend its reading to anyone currently working as Engineering Manager (or any other similar label) or willing to :-)

Charity Majors, Liz Fong-Jones, George Miranda: Observability Engineering (2022, O'Reilly Media, Incorporated) 2 estrellas

Review of 'Observability Engineering' on 'Goodreads'

No matter how much I usually enjoy reading Charity Majors thoughts and posts (it's the only author among the three that I follow, sorry), I confess that this book didn't reach my expectations :-/

I can only agree with some other reviews I just read: from my point of view, it's missing a lot of practicality, a lot of practical content. I would have preferred having several detailed and real-world examples about how to apply and get the value of observability (e.g. with code, screenshots, private videos, I don't know) rather than several chapters with information for building your own o11y platform.

I absolutely recommend following everything shared by Charity Majors, it's pure gold. But this book... I think it highly depends on your needs and expectations :-/
