Oliver Twist, OR: the Parish Boy's Progress, is Charles Dickens's second novel, and was first published as a serial from 1837 to 1839. The story centres on orphan Oliver Twist, born in a workhouse and sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the "Artful Dodger", a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin.

Oliver is an orphan living on the dangerous London streets with no one but himself to rely on. Fleeing from poverty and hardship, he falls in with a criminal street gang who will not let him go, however hard he tries to escape.

Una mujer de desconocido origen dará a luz en un hospicio administrado por la jerarquía de la iglesia anglicana; En la Inglaterra del siglo XIX la red de hospicios, junto con la de parroquias, cónclaves, etc., constituía una jerarquía muy similar a un estado dentro del estado Inglés.

La pobre mujer fallece en ese esfuerzo sobrehumano y titánico de traer vida al mundo. Pero prevalecerá su hijo, Oliver Twist. A través de sus ojos, desde sus primeros días en el hospicio, hasta sus aventuras en las calles de Londres, veremos una especie de radiografía de la sociedad victoriana. Veremos cómo la Revolución Industrial quebró las relaciones sociales y cómo la avaricia del capitalismo se filtró hasta en los pequeños caciques locales (cómo por ejemplo el "Judio Fagín", un pequeño mafioso que se dedica a la explotación infantil).
