Nidali, the rebellious daughter of an Egyptian-Greek mother and a Palestinian father, narrates her story from her childhood in Kuwait, her early teenage years in Egypt (to where she and her family fled the 1990 Iraqi invasion), to her family's last flight to Texas.

My first book in English

5 estrellas

‘A Map of Home’ was the first novel I read entirely in English. The book had been suggested by the SUGxPalestine Book Club, as its author - Randa Jarrar - is an American of Egyptian and Palestinian descent.

The reading proposal was to read the Galician translation of ‘Un mapa do lar’, but given the difficulty in finding it, I decided to read it in English.

‘A Map of Home’ is a coming-of-age story, which tells the story of Nidali in Kuwait, Egypt and the United States.

Set during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait and with the Arab-Israeli conflict as a backdrop, the novel explores the problems of Nidali and her family, alluding to the question of what ‘home’ means and the character's identity.
